Length escortA load over 90'L needs one rear escort. (ODOT OS 1A)
Width escortA load over 13'W needs one lead escort, or one rear escort on multiple lane highways. (ODOT OS 1A)
Height escortA load over 14'6"H needs one lead escort with a height sensing device. (ODOT OS 1A)
Lead and rearA load over 14'6"W or over 14'10"H needs one lead and one rear escort. The same applies when a load meets more than one of the length, width and height conditions above. (ODOT OS 1A)
Police escortsODOT may also require private or police escorts at its discretion, and when it does, the requirement is written on the permit. A police vehicle does not count as a private escort unless the permit says so. (Ohio Administrative Code, permit conditions rule; ODOT OS 1A)
Overhead clearanceA load over 14'10"H must be coordinated with the owners of all overhead signs, signals and utilities on the route. (ODOT OS 1A)
Travel hoursPermitted loads move in daylight, from one half hour before sunrise until one half hour after sunset. Overweight loads within legal dimensions have no hour or day limits as long as they do not obstruct normal traffic. (ODOT OS 1A)
Rush hoursLoads over 12'W may not move from 6:30 to 9:00 a.m. or 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the counties ODOT lists on form OS 1A. (ODOT OS 1A)
WeekendsLoads over 12'W may not move from 3 p.m. on Saturday or Sunday until one half hour before sunrise the next day. From April 1 through November 30, the same applies from 3 p.m. on Friday. (ODOT OS 1A)
HolidaysPermitted loads may not move from noon the day before a designated holiday until sunrise the day after, unless the permit says otherwise. (Ohio Administrative Code, permit conditions rule; ODOT OS 1A)
WeatherPermitted loads may not move in adverse weather or road conditions, such as storms, slippery or snow covered roads, thick fog or other conditions that restrict visibility, unless ODOT waives this. (Ohio Administrative Code, permit conditions rule)
Local roadsCounty and township roads, local streets off the State Highway System and the Ohio Turnpike need permission from those authorities. (ODOT OS 1A)

Rules change. We checked these rules on October 1, 2026 against ODOT form OS 1A (Rev. 01/18), form OS 8 and the permit conditions rule in the Ohio Administrative Code, and each one against a second source. Our permitting team confirms the current rules for every move.

When does an Ohio load need escorts?

Under ODOT form OS 1A, a load over 90'L needs a rear escort, a load over 13'W needs a lead escort (a rear escort on multiple lane highways), and a load over 14'6"W or over 14'10"H needs a lead and a rear escort.

Can wide loads move at rush hour in Ohio?

Not in the counties ODOT lists on form OS 1A. In those counties, loads over 12'W may not move from 6:30 to 9:00 a.m. or 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
