Before the move
How we plan a Rhode Island load
Every Rhode Island move starts with a single trip permit from RIDOT, good for 5 days and filed through the RIDOT permit portal. Our permitting team checks the size, weight and route against the Rhode Island rules, then sets the escorts and travel windows the permit calls for.
Rhode Island moves run from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, with no moves from sunset Friday to sunrise Monday. From 12'W one escort runs with the load, in front on undivided roads and behind on divided highways, and over 14'6"W or 90'L there are two.
On I 195 in Providence, the Washington Bridge is limited to 48 tons (96,000 lbs) in both directions, and oversize loads are restricted there, so heavy loads route around it. At 200,000 lbs or more, RIDOT requires an independent analysis of every structure on the route. Our 22 axle setups carry loads up to 300,000 lbs.
