Before the move
How we plan a Massachusetts load
Every Massachusetts move starts with a MassDOT oversize or overweight permit, requested through the MassDOT online permit system. Our permitting team checks the size, weight and route against the Massachusetts rules, then sets the pilot cars and travel windows the permit calls for.
Height is the first thing we check in Massachusetts. The legal height is 13'6"H, and the Callahan and Sumner Tunnels in Boston top out at 12'6"H, so we plan around them. On the Massachusetts Turnpike and the Metropolitan Highway System, one pilot car follows a load over 12'W, and over 13'6"W there is one in front and one behind.
Over 130,000 lbs, MassDOT treats the load as a super load and requires detailed engineering calculations. Permitted loads move from 12:01 a.m. Monday to noon Saturday and on Sunday mornings, and never on the major holidays. Our 22 axle setups carry loads up to 300,000 lbs.
