How Vermont sizes up a heavy load

The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), part of the Vermont Agency of Transportation, issues oversize and overweight permits through VT Haul Pass, under 23 V.S.A. 1400 and 1402 and Vermont DMV Rule 14-050-019. These are the numbers we plan every Vermont load with. Run your exact load and route through our permit tool to see every state on the trip.

Escorts

Vermont escort requirements

Vermont sets escorts by width, length and overhang, and the DMV can add more escorts for a given move.

Vermont escorts by load size

Official sources linked

Escort rules come from Vermont DMV Rule 14-050-019. When one escort is required, it leads on undivided highways and follows on divided highways, and the DMV may require two or more. The permit lists the escorts for each move and overrides the general table. (Vermont DMV permit rules, Vermont DMV Rule 14-050-019 (CVO-110))

Height and routes

Route surveys, tall loads and utilities

What Vermont asks of the tallest loads.

  1. Legal height

13'6"H is the legal height on all highways. Taller loads need a permit. (Vermont DMV single trip permits, Vermont DMV permit rules)

  2. Engineering review

Over 14'H on state and Interstate highways, the route needs an engineering inspection. (Vermont DMV Rule 14-050-019 (CVO-110))

Travel times

Travel hours, nights, weekends and holidays

When a permitted load may move in Vermont.

  1. Hours

Over width, over length and over height loads move from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, unless the permit says otherwise. (Vermont DMV permit rules, Vermont DMV Rule 14-050-019 (CVO-110))
