How Connecticut sizes up a heavy load
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) issues oversize and overweight permits from its permit office in Newington and its online permit system, under the Connecticut regulations in RCSA 14-270. These are the numbers we plan every Connecticut load with. Run your exact load and route through our permit tool to see every state on the trip.

Connecticut legal limits and permit thresholds
Over any legal limit, the load needs a CTDOT permit before it moves.

Escorts
Connecticut escort requirements
Connecticut sets escorts by width, height, length and overhang, and some counts differ on divided highways and undivided roads.
Connecticut escorts by load size
Official sources linked| Load | Escorts |
|---|---|
| Over 12'W up to 13'6"W | One escort: behind on divided highways, in front on undivided roads (CTDOT permit FAQ, RCSA 14-270-21) |
| 13'6"W or more | One in front and one behind (CTDOT permit FAQ) |
| 15'W or more | One in front and two behind (CTDOT permit FAQ) |
| Over 14'H | One front escort (CTDOT permit FAQ) |
| 15'4"H or more | One front escort, plus Connecticut State Police in front and behind (CTDOT permit FAQ) |
| Over 80'L, undivided roads | One rear escort (CTDOT permit FAQ) |
| Over 100'L | Divided highways: one rear escort. Undivided roads: one in front and one behind (CTDOT permit FAQ) |
| Over 119'11"L | One in front and one behind, plus Connecticut State Police in front and behind (CTDOT permit FAQ) |
| Overhang over 25' | One pilot car (RCSA 14-270-21) |
Escort rules come from the CTDOT escort table and RCSA 14-270-21. When one escort is required, it precedes on two or three lane roads and follows on four or more lane divided roads. The permit lists the escorts for each move, including any State Police escort, and overrides the general table. (CTDOT permit FAQ, RCSA 14-270-21)
