How Arizona sizes up a heavy load
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Motor Vehicle Division issues Class A and Class C oversize and overweight permits for nonreducible loads on state routes, through its ePRO online system. These are the numbers we plan every Arizona load with. Run your exact load and route through our permit tool to see every state on the trip.
Check your load
Enter your width, height, length and weight in our permit tool to see the Arizona rules and every other state on your route, each with its official source.
Arizona limits
Arizona legal limits and permit thresholds
Over any legal limit, the load needs an ADOT permit for a nonreducible load on state routes. City and county roads need their own permit.

Escorts
Arizona escort requirements
ADOT writes the escorts on each permit. These escort rules are set in the Arizona rules.
Arizona escorts by load size
Official sources linked| Load | Escorts |
|---|---|
| Over 11'W up to 14'W at night | 1 rear escort from 3 a.m. to half an hour before sunrise (Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2)) |

ADOT sets the full escort list on each permit by the load, the route and the time of travel.
Height and routes
Route surveys, utilities and continuous travel
What Arizona asks of tall, wide and heavy loads.
Route survey
ADOT reviews each Class C application on its own and may require a route survey and a contingency plan, based on bridges, load size and weight, pavement, road width, grade and condition, and traffic. (Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2), ADOT Class C permits)
Overhead utilities
A Class C applicant contacts the utility and cable companies on the route to confirm overhead line clearance, and the utility is told before a load over 16'H passes under its lines. (Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2))
Continuous travel
Loads up to 10'W, 14'6"H and 10' front and rear overhang may travel day and night. (Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2))
Height pole
Over 15'H at night, a front escort with a height pole. (Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2))
Engineering analysis
Loads outside the weight tables in the Arizona Administrative Code need an ADOT engineering analysis, at $125 per 50 miles. (ADOT Class C permits, Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2))
Travel times
Travel hours, nights, weekends and holidays
When a permitted load may move in Arizona.
Hours
Over the continuous travel limits, half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, unless the permit sets other hours. (Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2))
Nights and weekends
Loads up to 16'W, 16'H, 120'L and 250,000 lbs may run from 3 a.m. on nights and weekends on the routes ADOT lists, when the permit says so. (Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2), ADOT Class C permits)
Metro curfews
Monday through Friday, 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m., oversize loads face limits on listed Phoenix and Tucson routes. (Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2))
Holidays
Loads over 10'W, 14'6"H, 10' overhang, 120'L or 250,000 lbs stop on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, from noon the day before; a Friday or Saturday holiday stops loads from noon Thursday. (Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2), ADOT holiday travel restrictions)
Superloads
Arizona Class C special permit
Arizona has no separate superload class. A load over any Class A limit, 14'W, 16'H, 120'L or 250,000 lbs, needs a Class C special permit, good for four working days. ADOT may require a route survey, loads outside the weight tables need an engineering analysis, and the permit may call for police escorts. (ADOT Class C permits, ADOT oversize and overweight permits, Arizona Administrative Code Title 17 Chapter 6 (Supp. 22 2))
