Savannah heavy haul

Port cargo and plant equipment, permitted twice

Reliable Transport LLC runs heavy haul and superload moves across the USA and Canada from our home base in Dayton, Ohio. For a Savannah load, our in house team files the GDOT permit and any local permit, plans the route and books the escorts, because a load on City of Savannah streets needs a city permit on top of the state one.

Local rules

Savannah permits, streets and port gates

City rules come from the City of Savannah and state rules from GDOT. Single source items say check with the agency.

  1. City permit on top of GDOT

On City of Savannah streets, a load over 13'6"H, 8'6"W or 65'L needs a City Oversize Load/Move Permit as well as the GDOT permit. Traffic Engineering inspects the route, Greenscapes reviews tree clearance and Savannah Police sets the date and time so a police escort can be provided. (City of Savannah oversize load and move permit) Check with City of Savannah Traffic Engineering.

  2. Signals, lines and trees

If overhead lines or traffic signals are in the way, the city requires an electrical escort at $52.00 per hour in operating hours and $81.00 per hour after hours. The applicant pays for any tree trimming, signal moves and utility relocation. (City of Savannah oversize load and move permit) Check with City of Savannah Traffic Engineering.

  3. Downtown truck limits

A City ordinance copy on the City agenda site bars stopping or parking a truck over 34'L, or with more than 3 axles, inside River Street, East Broad Street, Gaston Street and Martin Luther King, Junior Boulevard, except on 5 listed street segments. Permitted deliveries there may not run 7 to 9 a.m., noon to 1 p.m. or 4 to 6 p.m. Check with City of Savannah Traffic Engineering.

  4. Port of Savannah gates

The Georgia Ports Authority sets its own gate hours and asks for prior arrangements before out of gauge cargo arrives. We confirm the terminal, gate and appointment before the truck is dispatched. Check with the Georgia Ports Authority.

  5. State routes

GDOT permit loads move from 30 minutes after sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset. Over 12'W or 75'L needs escorts or amber lights, and at 15'6"H a front escort runs a height sensor. (Rules of the Georgia DOT, Chapter 672 2, GDOT oversize permits)
