This page is general information only, not legal advice and not a permit. Rules change often and each state's permit and official rules are the final word. Mobile heavy haul

Port of Mobile cargo, routed clear of the tunnels

Reliable Transport LLC runs heavy haul and superload moves across the USA and Canada from our home base in Dayton, Ohio. For a Mobile load, our in house team files the ALDOT permit and any local permit, plans the route and books the escorts, and routes tall loads clear of the downtown tunnels under the Mobile River.

Local rules

Port of Mobile, tunnels and ALDOT routing

Port facts come from the Alabama Port Authority and permit rules from ALDOT. Single source items say check with the agency.

  1. Port of Mobile project cargo

The Alabama Port Authority lists up to 1,500 PSF capacity, Ro/Ro ramps and a 7 axle mobile harbor crane that lifts up to 110 short tons at 75'. Cargo moves direct to on dock rail, truck or barge, with long term storage at Buchanan Yard. (Alabama Port Authority project cargo) Check with the Alabama Port Authority.

  2. Bankhead Tunnel

The Bankhead Tunnel downtown has a 12' clearance with an overheight warning system. Tall loads need a route that stays out of it. Check with ALDOT.

  3. Wallace Tunnels on I 10

Hazardous materials trucks are barred from the I 10 Wallace Tunnels and detour through downtown Mobile over the Cochrane Africatown USA Bridge. (FHWA and ALDOT I 10 Mobile River Bridge final EIS, 2019)

  4. Stick to the permit route

An ALDOT permit load may use only the roads on its permit or routing authorization. Loads keep 1/2 mile apart, leave the road when traffic backs up and park when visibility drops under 500'. (ALDOT permit rules and regulations, Ala. Admin. Code chapter 450 3 1)
