This page is general information only, not legal advice and not a permit. Rules change often and each state's permit and official rules are the final word. Jacksonville heavy haul

Off the heavy lift berth and onto the trailer

Reliable Transport LLC runs heavy haul and superload moves across the USA and Canada from our home base in Dayton, Ohio. For a Jacksonville load, our in house team files the FDOT permit and any local permit, plans the route and books the escorts, and checks the Duval County peak hours and the route limits near the port before the load rolls.

JAXPORT, peak hours and route limits

Port facts come from JAXPORT and permit rules from FDOT. Single source items say check with the agency.

  1. Blount Island heavy lift berth

The heavy lift berth at Blount Island Marine Terminal handles up to 2,000 lbs per square foot, with rail capability to 78 kips per axle. Blount Island has 7,094' of deepwater berths and sits 12.5 nautical miles from the sea buoy. (JAXPORT heavy lift, JAXPORT, planning heavy electrical and project cargo, JAXPORT Blount Island Marine Terminal)

  2. High and wide rail

JAXPORT lists high and wide rail clearance of 20'H and 13'W on the CSX system, for cargo that goes by rail instead of truck. (JAXPORT heavy lift) Check with JAXPORT.

  3. Duval County peak hours

Under FDOT blanket permits, loads over 12'W or 85'L may not move 7 to 9 a.m. or 4 to 6 p.m. on weekdays on any state road in Duval County, Interstates included. Florida's rule also bars movement in congested areas at peak hours unless the permit allows it. (FDOT blanket permit movement conditions, rev. March 17, 2025, Fla. Admin. Code Rule 14 26.012)

  4. Route limits near the port

FDOT caps blanket permit loads at 12'W on SR 105/SR A1A from Blount Island to Fernandina Beach, 10'W through the US 17 and I 295 South Jax interchange, and 12'W and 100'L on the I 295 eastbound ramp to I 95 northbound. US 17/US 23 Kings Road westbound under I 95 northbound clears only 13'5"H. (FDOT blanket permit route restrictions, rev. July 2025) Check with FDOT for single trip permit routes.

  5. City streets

Florida law lets local authorities issue permits for roads under their own jurisdiction, so a leg on City of Jacksonville streets needs city approval as well. (Florida Statutes 316.550) Check with the City of Jacksonville.
