Houston heavy haul

Built for loads that leave Houston wide, tall and heavy

A lot of our Texas work starts in Houston: switchgear buildings, wide loads lifted off ships on the Houston Ship Channel and equipment that is too tall for a standard route. Reliable Transport LLC plans each move in house, from the TxDMV permit and the bridge study to the escorts and the crews that lift lines on the way out of town.

Moving in Houston

Houston permit rules we plan around

These Houston area rules shape our routes most often. Each one is listed by TxDMV and confirmed by a second source.

  1. 17'6"H and over in the Houston District

A load 17'6"H or taller needs its permit emailed to the TxDOT Houston District signal shop 48 hrs before it moves. TxDOT approved signal contractors escort the load and raise or disconnect signal and light assemblies at the mover's cost. We book them while we plan the route.

  2. City of Houston streets

A TxDMV permit covers state highways. A load that uses Houston city streets also needs a City of Houston oversize permit, and that city permit is not valid on state highways and freeways. We file both.

  3. Conroe and Friendswood curfews

North on Interstate 45, loads over 14'W, 14'H or 110'L can't move inside Conroe city limits from 6:00 to 9:00 am or 3:00 to 7:00 pm, Monday to Friday. Friendswood uses the same limits and hours on FM 518, FM 528 and FM 2351.

  4. Width on Interstate highways

Texas permits top out at 16'W on Interstate highways, and anything over 20'W needs a route inspection before TxDMV issues the permit.

Questions

Houston heavy haul questions

Do you handle the permits for Houston moves yourself?

Yes. Our in house team files the TxDMV permit and any City of Houston street permit, plans the route and escorts, and books TxDOT approved signal contractors when a load is 17'6"H or taller.

How wide can a load be on Interstate highways around Houston?

Texas permits loads up to 16'W on Interstate highways. Over 20'W, TxDMV needs a route inspection before it issues the permit, so wider loads take longer to plan.

How many escorts does a wide Houston load need?

Texas requires one escort over 14'W and front and rear escorts over 16'W on all roads. A load over 17'H adds a front escort, and a load over 125'L needs front and rear escorts.

Have you moved oversize loads out of Houston before?

Yes. We hauled a 110,000 lb switchgear building from Houston to Los Angeles in 2025, and in June 2024 we moved five loads 19'W to 24'W off a ship at the Port of Houston to Arizona.
